What to look for

  • Wide gape

The go-to for bottom baits and wafters. Plenty of room for the point to catch hold.

  • Curve shank

Turns quickly and suits the same rigs.

Sizes to try
Size 6 or 8 (rule of thumb for your bait)
Wire gauge
A standard or medium gauge is fine in open water.
Point
A straight point is simple and easy to check. Beaked points can hide in weed.
Barbs
Check the venue rules. Lots of UK waters insist on barbless or micro-barbed.

These are general rules most carp anglers go by, not a guarantee. No hook makes fishing safe on its own. Balance your whole setup and look after the fish.
