When temperatures crash, fish slow down. They need far less food and tend to group up in the most stable water. That doesn't mean you can't catch — you just have to find them and tempt them with very little.
How fish react
Carp
Often hold in deeper areas or snags and feed briefly in mild spells.
Tench & bream
Largely shut down in the depths of winter.
Pike, perch & roach
Remain catchable and are great winter targets.
Location
Look for deeper water, sheltered bays out of the cold wind and known winter holding spots. Ask the bailiff — winter areas are often well known on a venue.
Bait and tactics
Small baits, bright colours, very little feed. Single hookbaits, maggots and small pop-ups are the order of the day. Moving to showing fish matters more than ever.
Safety
Frosty banks and frozen margins are dangerous. Never walk on ice, and keep fish handling quick because cold air damages fish.
FAQs

- Less, but often during the warmest part of the day. Afternoons can be best.
- What's the best winter bait for carp?
- Small, bright and few — a single pop-up or a few maggots often beat a big bed of bait.
