Fishing in hot weather and heatwaves

Low oxygen and bright sun make fish sluggish. Fish early and late, find oxygen, and look after the fish.

Warm water holds less oxygen. In a heatwave, fish become sluggish in the middle of the day and are more easily stressed when caught. The fishing can still be great at dawn and dusk.

How fish react

  • Carp

Often sit near the surface in the heat — great for floaters and zigs.

  • Tench & bream

Feed best at first light and as the sun goes down.

  • All species

Vulnerable to stress — keep handling to a minimum.

Location

Look for oxygen: the windward end, inflows, aerators, weed beds and deeper water. Shade from trees is a magnet in the middle of the day.

Tactics

Surface fishing and zigs are the go-to for carp. For tench and bream, be set up before dawn. Avoid big beds of bait that can rot in warm water.

Fish care

Keep fish in the water, wet everything, skip long photos and never retain fish in keepnets or sacks in hot weather. Follow any venue heat rules.
