Step 1: Assess space access and landing feasibility

Alright mate, let's get stuck into lure casting accuracy around structure. I'll walk you through what to look for, what to try and how to tell whether it helped. We'll start with assess space access and landing feasibility, then work through a proper practice job at each step. Take it at your own pace and keep a few notes so you've got a useful plan for next time.

By the end of this step

Have a go at: assess space access and landing feasibility.

Check first

Stay bankside; do not wade or scramble to make a position work. Do not cast near overhead power lines. Check fishery/club rules and GOV.UK rod licence rules where applicable, plus the relevant national requirements elsewhere in the UK. Before fishing for predators, arrange suitable fish-care equipment and in-person learning on handling and unhooking, supported by Angling Trust guidance.

Willy’s take

Before casting tight to any structure, check you can actually land a fish safely from that spot, a snaggy, high bank or thick overhanging branches might look perfect for casting accuracy practice but could make landing a hooked fish genuinely difficult or risky.

Check access rules too, since some structure like moored boats or private jetties isn't fair game regardless of how tempting the cover looks. Look at your backcast space as well, tight structure often means tight banks, so make sure you won't catch a tree, a fence, or worse, another angler, when you draw back to cast.

Kit I'd start with

  • For lure casting accuracy practice, use the lure rod and line combination you normally fish with rather than switching setups purely for practice, since you want to build genuine accuracy with your actual gear. A selection of practice targets - floating markers, hoops, or simply fixed points on the bank - helps measure progress concretely.
  • Keep a bite-resistant wire trace on if you're practising near water that holds pike, since casting practice near real structure means real bycatch risk, not just a drill.
  • Trade-off: lighter lures cast more precisely in calm conditions but get blown off target easily in wind, so match lure weight to conditions on the day rather than assuming lighter is always better for accuracy.
  • For lure practice, a 7-8ft rod with a stated 5-20g casting range is an example for small lures in open water, not for casting heavy deadbaits. Count the head and plastic together; step up the outfit for larger lures and likely bycatch, within maker guidance.

On the bank

Worked example

Imagine this: You've spotted a fallen tree with a tangle of branches overhanging deep water that looks perfect for a pike or perch. What safe starting choice would you make here, and what would you watch before changing it?

Your turn: Assess space access and landing feasibility

  1. 1

Check landing feasibility before casting near any structure

  2. 2

Confirm the structure is within permitted fishing access

That's the free sample — this is where it stops

The full step keeps going with the rest of the practice job, common mistakes and fixes, a check-your-understanding quiz and your Accuracy practice and structure assessment card. Then 3 more steps, each with its own task, and Coach Willy on hand to talk it through.
