Step 1: Choose a suitable product and preparation guidance

Alright mate, let's get stuck into particle baits: preparation, storage and baiting discipline. I'll walk you through what to look for, what to try and how to tell whether it helped. We'll start with choose a suitable product and preparation guidance, then work through a proper practice job at each step. Take it at your own pace and keep a few notes so you've got a useful plan for next time.

By the end of this step

Have a go at: choose a suitable product and preparation guidance.

Check first

Incorrectly prepared particles can put fish at risk. Do not feed unidentified or unverified bait, and check fishery or club restrictions before preparing it.

Willy’s take

Particles are things such as seeds and grains, and preparation matters for fish welfare. For an easy first go I’d use sealed ready-prepared hemp or maize from a proper bait maker, where allowed. Don’t feed dry hard seeds and don’t assume every particle needs the same treatment.

If preparing raw bait, choose a named product with clear maker’s directions for that ingredient; use those, not a universal soak-and-boil rule. Check bans, storage instructions and how you will deliver it. For a hookbait, a permitted ready-prepared maize grain on a hair can be simple on clean ground; make sure it stays attached after soaking.

Kit I'd start with

  • Particle fishing is most straightforward with sealed, ready-prepared bait from a proper bait manufacturer, such as tins or vacuum-packed hemp and maize, which removes the guesswork of cooking raw seeds yourself and reduces welfare risk from badly prepared bait.
  • Where you do prepare particles at home, buy a named product with its own clear preparation instructions rather than an unlabelled bulk ingredient, and have kitchen scales, a suitable pan, and storage tubs with sealable lids ready for labelling batches by ingredient and date.
  • A standard hair rig works for most particle hookbaits, such as a single grain of maize hair-rigged on clean ground, and a small scoop keeps feed quantities consistent and measurable across visits rather than guessed from a bucket. Check the venue's rules on particle bait specifically before buying or preparing anything, since bans and restrictions vary noticeably between fisheries.
  • For a clean spot, a size 8-10 hook with one or two prepared maize grains on a short hair is a trial. Leave the point and bend clear and soak-test that actual bait before deciding it will last all night.

On the bank

Worked example

Imagine you have an unlabelled sack of dry seeds and a tub of ready-prepared maize. I’d leave the unknown sack out and check that the maize is allowed and in date. That gives you an uncomplicated bait to learn with without guessing the preparation.

Your turn: Choose a suitable product and preparation guidance

  1. 1

Choose a named prepared bait or clear product-specific instructions.

  2. 2

Check venue particle bans and storage directions.

That's the free sample — this is where it stops

The full step keeps going with the rest of the practice job, common mistakes and fixes, a check-your-understanding quiz and your Product-specific preparation and storage checklist. Then 3 more steps, each with its own task, and Coach Willy on hand to talk it through.
