Step 1: Check permitted feature-finding methods

Alright mate, let's get stuck into read lakebed features and map useful spots privately. I'll walk you through what to look for, what to try and how to tell whether it helped. We'll start with check permitted feature-finding methods, then work through a proper practice job at each step. Take it at your own pace and keep a few notes so you've got a useful plan for next time.

By the end of this step

Have a go at: check permitted feature-finding methods.

Check first

Check fishery/club rules and GOV.UK rod licence rules for where you will fish; permission and licence requirements are separate. Stay on stable banks, do not wade, and keep rods and casts away from overhead power lines and people. Learn unfamiliar casting setups in person with a qualified coach and consult Angling Trust safety guidance.

Willy’s take

First check whether bare leads, marker floats and distance sticks are allowed. I’d map a small area from firm footing with an unhooked feature-finding setup, not scatter casts across other anglers. A marker float is a float used with a lead to help measure depth; it is not proof that a spot holds fish.

Use one bank landmark and note the direction for each check. Start at manageable range in open water, away from timber and cables. If fish are showing right there, observe instead of thrashing the spot. Your aim is a useful little sketch of fishable ground, not a pretend detailed lake survey.

Kit I'd start with

  • Mapping a venue's bottom needs a specific, modest kit rather than a full surveying setup: a bare lead for permitted feature-finding, a marker float and leger stem if the venue allows marker floats specifically, distance sticks for recording repeatable line lengths where permitted, and a notebook or waterproof card for sketching a simple diagram of bank markers, clear patches and uncertain edges.
  • Bring your normal fishing rod rather than anything heavier, since feature-finding doesn't need extra casting weight beyond what you'd fish with anyway. A pair of polarised glasses helps confirm visually what the lead suggests by feel in clearer margin areas.
  • This kit produces a working sketch of fishable ground, not a precise depth chart, and should never include a method the venue specifically bans, since some fisheries restrict marker floats or bare-lead casting near other anglers. With a permitted marker float, pay out known lengths of line from a freely running lead setup until the float appears.
  • That estimates depth only when the lead stays put and line runs freely; weed, undertow and line angle can spoil the reading.

On the bank

Worked example

Imagine the fishery bans marker floats but allows occasional bare-lead checks. I’d use those permitted checks for feel and clean returns, leaving exact depth unknown. I wouldn’t make up a depth or use the banned float just to fill every box on a map.

Your turn: Check permitted feature-finding methods

  1. 1

Check permitted tools and safe casting space.

  2. 2

Choose one open area and visible bank marker.

That's the free sample — this is where it stops

The full step keeps going with the rest of the practice job, common mistakes and fixes, a check-your-understanding quiz and your Private feature sketch and uncertainty log. Then 3 more steps, each with its own task, and Coach Willy on hand to talk it through.
