Barford Bridge Meadow - Great Barford

Barford Bridge Meadow is the LAA-run stretch at Great Barford on the River Great Ouse. It’s a proper fishy bit of river, with lure-friendly bank, big perch and pike, plus the wider Great Barford/Roxton area throwing up cracking mixed bags.

Run by The London Anglers’ Association · checked 10 Oct 2026 · boundaries only partly described by the club

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is officially Barford Bridge Meadow, tucked in at Great Barford and covered by The London Anglers Association.
  • Much of the meadow is fishable bank, so there’s plenty of room to roam rather than sitting on one peg all day.
  • The bank suits roving lure anglers nicely. A cheeky wander looking for perch and pike is bang on here.
  • Big perch are present, with pike in the mix too. Keep moving, watch the water and cover likely features.
  • The association says the fishing is similar to its nearby Roxton stretches, while the handbook says the river character changes between sections.
  • The wider Great Barford and Roxton area is known for roach, shoals of bream and good numbers of chub. Dace, tench and carp are also named across the combined section.
  • The LAA handbook talks about excellent bags of fish, including bream match bags reaching 100 lb. That’s proper mixed-fish potential.
  • The handbook also identifies the water as excellent for roach, so trotting and feeder work are both worth having in the armoury.
  • Access is around Great Barford Bridge, with nearby lay-bys, paths and tracks. The postcode given for the group is MK44 3LF.
  • After rain, take care: fields may be ploughed right to the water’s edge, making a long bank walk a proper faff.

Methods: Roving lures are a natural fit for the fishable meadow bank, especially when hunting perch and pike. For the wider mixed fishery, trotting and feeder fishing are sensible approaches for roach, bream, chub and dace.

Key rules

  • Fishing requires membership of The London Anglers Association; no day tickets are available.
  • Anglers must hold the necessary Environment Agency rod licence.
  • Night fishing is permitted at no extra cost.
  • The legal river season stated by the LAA is 16 June to 15 March inclusive.
  • Visitors to non-public-access fisheries must be members under the LAA’s lease and insurance requirements.
  • Fields can be ploughed to the water’s edge, making bank walking difficult after rain.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
