East End Farm, Pavenham
East End Farm at Pavenham is a wild, secluded half-mile of the Great Ouse, tucked upstream of Oakley Weir. It’s Phoenix Angling Club water, with cracking chub fishing and some proper roach-and-dace trotting when the river’s right.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a lovely bit of river rather than a manicured commercial fishery. Wild, quiet and nicely tucked away.
- The stretch runs for around half a mile, with shallow runs feeding into deeper pools. Plenty to go at.
- There are loads of overhanging trees and rafts, so expect cover, tight lines and the odd cheeky snag.
- The best swims are often on the nearside bank. Work the margins and crease rather than charging straight into the middle.
- Chub are the headline fish here. The club recorded chub to 6 lb 11 oz in winter 2021–2022, which is a proper fish for the Ouse.
- Roach and dace are present too. Trotting is described as excellent in late summer and autumn, especially through the shallower runs.
- Barbel were historically notable on this stretch. The club reckons one or two may still remain, so keep an eye on the deeper, faster water.
- Higher winter flows can push fish about, thanks to the relatively fast water. That’s when the deeper pools and slack edges become worth a good look.
- Access isn’t a stroll from the car. After parking, it’s a 280-metre walk across a field, and the club warns anglers to watch for rabbit holes.
- This is membership-controlled water, not a public free fishery. Follow the parking and access requirements on the club map, and expect a bit of work-party involvement too.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Trotting is the obvious shout for roach and dace in late summer and autumn. For chub, fish the nearside cover, rafts and deeper pools carefully, switching approach as winter flow pushes the fish around.
