We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The fishery is reached through Felmersham village, with directions starting from the A6 at Milton Ernest. You cross the river at Radwell before carrying on to Felmersham.
- MKAA gives the location as OS eastings 499420 and northings 258410. The nearest supplied postcode is MK43 7JZ, and the fishery is signposted Letchworth and DAA.
- It’s roughly a mile and a half of river, with faster water, slacker bits, deeper swims and a backwater to pick apart. Plenty to keep you moving.
- The stretch regularly produces double-figure bags of roach, so trotting lighter gear through the medium-paced flow looks right on the money when conditions allow.
- There are perch topping 3lb, chub to 5lb and the occasional tench. Hefty barbel are in the mix too, while bream, bleak and pike are also named for the Felmersham section.
- Some areas have pipe reeds and can be difficult or unfishable. A few pegs beside the island can be very weedy, so don’t expect every swim to be a neat, drop-in affair.
- Look for the crease where quicker water meets the slack, deeper bends and the edges of the backwater. Those changing depths and flows are the real appeal here.
- For roach, trotting is the obvious first look. Chub and bream should suit a feeder approach, while stronger tackle is sensible if you’re targeting the barbel or a cheeky pike.
- The Letchworth section is about a mile downstream of the bridge, on the bank opposite Felmersham Church. Parking is advised roadside, and the bank-side bridleway is strictly not for driving down.
Methods: A versatile stretch for trotting and feeder work, with lighter gear for the roach and stronger tackle when barbel, chub or pike are the target. Fish the changes in pace, depth and cover rather than charging through every swim.
