Harrold Lower

Harrold Lower is a remote, lightly fished bit of the Great Ouse, run by Olney & Clifton Fishing Association and shared with Biggleswade & Hitchin Angling Association. It’s membership-only, with a mobile, stalking-style approach looking the best bet.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The water runs through four fields, with three more downstream fields to explore beyond the first. Plenty of room to go wandering.
  • Harrold Lower joins Harrold Upper to make roughly a mile of continuous river bank. The exact Lower section length isn’t confirmed.
  • Access is via a farm track dropping down a steep hill from Harrold Road. It’s a proper bumpy one, so leave the barrow at home.
  • Park on the grass verge at the top of the access track. Coming from Lavendon, travel about two miles along Harrold Road and park on the left opposite the farm-track entrance.
  • The association calls it remote and lightly fished. That makes it a cracking option if you fancy getting away from busy banks and having a mooch.
  • The holder hasn’t confirmed established species here, and says the water’s potential is largely unknown. Keep expectations open and treat each swim as a bit of an explorer’s job.
  • It’s described as suitable for a mobile angler travelling light. Stalking-style fishing fits the venue nicely, with a small kit and plenty of moving between fields.
  • Night fishing is allowed, but after sundown you must use bite alarms or nite-lites. Guests aren’t allowed at pegs between 8pm and 8am.
  • Specimen fishing requires an unhooking mat. Carry a landing net, clear litter from your swim, and return all eels alive.
  • No camping tents, fires or barbecues. Shelters or bivvies are allowed, while camping, swimming and boating are prohibited.

Methods: Keep it light and mobile, exploring the fields and fishing a stalking-style approach. The association doesn’t confirm the established species or the water’s likely methods, so a flexible, exploratory setup is bob on.

The club doesn't list species for this stretch, so we haven't guessed.

Key rules

  • Members must hold a valid EA rod licence and follow EA rules and applicable local by-laws.
  • No day tickets may be bought on the bank; Harrold Lower is excluded from day-ticket fishing.
  • Unhooking mats are required for specimen fishing.
  • No camping tents; fishing shelters or bivvies only.
  • Guests are not allowed at pegs between 8pm and 8am.
  • Open fires and barbecues are prohibited.
  • Cars must not pass meadow gates without landowner or committee permission.
  • Camping, swimming and boating are prohibited. Coarse fish may not be killed or removed, except specified alien species such as zander and red signal crayfish. All eels must be returned alive.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
