We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is the River Great Ouse at Chellington, tucked between Harrold and Felmersham in Bedfordshire.
  • WDNAC controls the stretch, and it’s available through club membership rather than as a published day-ticket fishery.
  • The water sits on the southern bank. No official measured length or peg count is published, so expect a proper walk-and-find sort of session.
  • The club highlights slower sections producing nets of roach, bream and perch. Nice territory for a steady session rather than charging about.
  • Chub are named for the water too, while the club reports specimen-sized barbel. That gives you a few cracking targets across the stretch.
  • A dirt track off Felmersham Road provides access, with parking for roughly four or five vehicles. Keep it tidy and don’t block gateways or pathways.
  • The access track can become a proper faff after prolonged wet weather and in winter, when vehicles may get stuck. Worth thinking ahead before loading the gear.
  • The traditional river close season applies from 15 March to 15 June each year, so the open season starts on 16 June.
  • Night fishing is identified as allowed in the club’s 2015 water leaflet, although current pages don’t publish a separate Chellington night-ticket price.
  • For tactics, the named slower water points towards roach, bream and perch approaches, while barbel and chub give you reason to look for stronger or more interesting water.

Methods: Trotting and feeder work suit the slower sections for roach, bream and perch. For the bigger chub and barbel, fish with suitable tackle and keep an eye out for the more interesting water.

Key rules

  • The traditional river close season applies from 15 March to 15 June annually.
  • Carry and show a valid membership book when requested.
  • Cars must not pass meadow gates without permission from the farmer.
  • Use designated car parks where provided.
  • Keep gateways and pathways clear.
  • Pike fishing requires wire traces.
  • No fires, camping, swimming or boating.
  • Carp and pike may not be retained in nets, slings, sacks or tubes except in organised matches.
  • A landing net is required on club waters.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
