River Great Ouse
River Great Ouse – Milton Ernest
The lowdown
- There’s a proper mix of river here: shallow runs and deeper glides, rather than one uniform bit of water. That change in character is the starting point when weighing up which swim takes your fancy.
- Streamer weed and overhanging trees provide fish habitat along the stretch. They’re the named features to keep an eye out for while having a look along the bank before settling into a swim.
- Barbel take top billing in the club’s description of Milton Ernest. If they’re your main interest, this is a stretch the club specifically flags for them — not just a general Great Ouse recommendation.
- Chub and dace get a mention too, so it isn’t all about barbel. Those are the other named targets here; there’s no need to pad out the fish list with guesses.
- Getting in starts at the locked gate opposite the Bedfordia Estate entrance. Follow the access track to the designated parking area, then it’s a short walk to the river. The guide gives MK44 1YU.
- Mind the seasonal parking restriction before loading the car. Vehicle access to the parking field is prohibited in winter; cautious summer use is allowed. The entrance gate must stay locked, too.
- Night fishing is permitted, with a separate night-fishing guest ticket available. Guests need their accompanying member, so sort that out before planning a session rather than treating this as a turn-up-and-pay venue.
- Those two lakes beside the access track aren’t included in this fishery. Keep your plans firmly on the river, and get guest-ticket arrangements squared away beforehand to avoid any unnecessary faff.
Methods: Use the shallow runs, deeper glides, streamer weed and tree cover to guide your swim choice. Barbel are the club’s main attraction, with chub and dace offering other named targets.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
