Benham Park, River Kennet

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Benham Estate, part of Sutton 1079, looks after five miles of the River Kennet plus six miles of carrier streams. The fishery is split into The Wilderness, The Park and Speen Moor.
- The main river is broad and forgiving, with long glides and deeper pools. A nice setup for working an upstream dry fly through steady water.
- The carrier streams are a different kettle of fish. Duckwood Stream, Pound Stream and Parliament Draft include narrow, intimate sections where careful casting really matters.
- This is primarily fly fishing, and the stated method is upstream dry fly only. Keep it tidy, cover the water properly and don’t go lobbing a great big line about.
- The headline fish is large wild brown trout. The estate also highlights a major Mayfly hatch in late May and early June, so mid-May to mid-June is a particularly tasty window.
- Day-rod fishing runs from April through September, with one to four rods available on selected dates. Thursdays are kept back for maintenance and exclusive bookings.
- There’s a minimum booking of two rods during the Mayfly period, from mid-May to mid-June. Worth sorting your mate out before getting too excited about a solo session.
- The setting is lovely parkland stuff: Capability Brown landscapes, mature oaks, water meadows, and sheep and cattle pasture. The river is also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
- A fully equipped fishing cabin sits near the water. The keeper manages banks and margins to balance fish cover with enough casting room, while ongoing restoration work focuses on habitat, fish passage and river health.
Methods: Upstream dry fly only. Fish the long glides and pool tails on the main river, then switch to careful, accurate casting on the narrower carrier streams.
