River Thames — Charvil, Buch Ait to Phillimores Island

A cracking bit of Berkshire Thames variety: Twyford & District Fishing Club’s Charvil stretch runs roughly three-quarters of a mile from downstream of Buch Ait to Phillimores Island and the Borough Marsh Stream mouth. There are numbered pegs 1–30, with bream, chub, barbel and seasonal roach and pike fishing to weigh up.

Run by Twyford & District Fishing Club · checked 5 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • There’s a proper change of scene along this three-quarter-mile stretch. The club’s numbered pegs run from 1–30, so you’ve got a useful starting point for choosing your swim rather than picking a spot blind.
  • Fancy bream? Pegs 1–7 are the club’s pointers for bream and skimmers. Keep those early numbers in mind when planning your day; there’s no need to treat the whole stretch as one identical prospect.
  • Chub take the spotlight at pegs 8–21, opposite Hallsmead Ait. That island is a handy landmark, and this is the part of the club’s stretch description to home in on for a chub session.
  • Pegs 21–25 sit on a wider section of river. It’s a useful change in character to bear in mind as you work through the peg numbers, with peg 21 also included in the chub area.
  • The Platforms, pegs 25–30, are the barbel pointer here. The club specifically names midriver, so that’s the useful bit to remember rather than assuming the action is all tucked along the near bank.
  • For roach, late summer and early autumn get the nod. That gives you a seasonal steer for a cheeky session, without pretending every peg or every month offers exactly the same fishing.
  • Winter brings pike fishing into the picture in the downstream area. Keep the calendar bob on, though: this river stretch is open from 16 June to 14 March inclusive, not throughout the whole year.
  • Sort the access before lugging your kit off. Use the main St. Patrick’s Stream car park; summer parking is behind the copse, but wet conditions close that access, usually around 1 October. Stick to field edges and fence lines.

Methods: Match your target to the peg numbers: bream and skimmers at 1–7, chub at 8–21, and midriver barbel at the Platforms, 25–30. For a seasonal switch, think roach in late summer and early autumn or downstream pike in winter.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
