Black Overfalls Weir Pool
The lowdown
- This is a weir pool with a bit of everything going on. Water arrives from D and E Section plus the New Cut, so expect changes in flow and plenty of character around the joins.
- The pool holds chub and shoals of good-sized bream. The society says bream over 6 lb turn up regularly, while barbel over 11 lb have also been caught here. Proper fish.
- There’s fishing from the pool, although swims are currently restricted and access to the beach area opposite the weir is limited. Don’t just assume every bit of bank is available.
- You can also fish the far bank of New Cut. Getting there means crossing the footbridge over the cut, so it’s a handy extra option when the main pool is busy.
- For chub and barbel, meat baits have accounted for sizable eels too. That makes a simple feeder or leger approach worth a look, especially when the river carries a bit of colour.
- The bream shoals should suit feeder work, while chub are well worth tackling around the crease, steadier edges and any cover. Keep things tidy and mobile if the swim allows.
- Barbel are the headline fish, with the weir pool and incoming water offering obvious places to explore. A robust feeder setup is the sensible starting point when the flow pushes through.
- Access is from the society’s main car park off Station Lane, Offord Cluny. The route heads past the Old Flour Mill, over Mill Stream and along the Ouse Valley Way beside the water.
- The walk follows a gate into the field, then continues beside Mill Stream, which runs from the Black Overfalls Weir Pool to the bridge. Mind walkers — the Ouse Valley Way must stay clear.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Feeder or leger tactics with meat are a solid shout for chub, barbel and the sizable eels. For the bream shoals, work the steadier water with a feeder and keep an eye on the changing flow from the New Cut and weir pool.
