Eaton Socon Weir / The Drift

The Drift is a cracking 600-yard middle-Ouse stretch at Eaton Socon Weir, run by Biggleswade & Hitchin Angling Association. It’s lightly fished, tree-lined and easy enough for finding a swim, with parking just a few yards from some pegs.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper middle-Ouse fishing, with the river running through a largely tree-lined stretch. Handy stuff when the wind gets up, as the trees give decent shelter.
  • The water is approximately 600 yards long, so it’s not a huge hike to have a look around. The association says finding a swim is generally not difficult.
  • Roach are the main event here, with fish over 1.5 lb reported. That’s a lovely stamp for anyone after a steady session.
  • There’s a large bream shoal on the stretch, with bream to around 7 lb present. Well worth keeping in mind when they’re on the munch.
  • Winter brings chub to approximately 6 lb, while pike, perch, dace, zander, tench, bleak, eels and gudgeon also turn up.
  • Carp patrol from Eaton Socon Weir towards Little Barford Power Station. The association reports river carp over 30 lb, so there’s a proper surprise or two in the stretch.
  • Cars can be parked within a few yards of swims in designated parking areas. Nice and bob on when you’ve got a load of kit or fancy keeping the faff down.
  • The stretch is described as lightly fished by association members, giving it a quieter feel than some better-known Ouse waters.
  • Night fishing is permitted on The Drift, but it’s managed through member waiting lists. General 2026/27 membership does not include night fishing.
  • With roach, bream, chub and predators all present, the stretch offers plenty to go at through the seasons. The tree-lined character and easy access add to the appeal.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: The fish mix gives you plenty of options, from targeting the dominant roach and big bream to keeping an eye out for winter chub and the larger carp. Pike, perch and zander add a cheeky predator angle too.
