The lowdown
- This is mature fenland river fishing, with a wide, attractive channel and a steady, slow pace. Not a tiny little drain — it’s a proper bit of water.
- Depth varies from roughly 9 to 20 feet, so there’s plenty to go at. Find the crease, steadier water and any changes in depth rather than just chucking blind.
- The west bank runs from Denver Sluice to Danby’s Drove. The east bank runs from Denver Sluice to Modney Court, giving the stretch a good spread of water.
- Access points include Wissey Mouth, the Railway Bridge, Modney Bridge and Danby Drove. Some sections have adjacent-road access, which keeps the faff down.
- KLAA says feeding is necessary to pull shoals onto this big river. Build it steadily and give the swim time to come on, especially when the water’s carrying a bit of colour.
- All methods are allowed according to the fishery description. That leaves room for feeder work, float fishing and targeting features at different depths.
- Carp have been caught here in recent seasons. Bream and roach are also named among the KLAA’s fish, so a well-fed swim could be well worth sticking with.
- The reedy margins offer pike sport, with lures or wobbled baits. Keep an eye out for ambush spots and quieter edges rather than only fishing the main flow.
- There’s extreme deep water, plus overhead power lines affecting the fishery. Take care with tackle, casts and where you stand — no heroics needed on this one.
Methods: Feeder fishing and float work are both on the cards, with regular feeding important for drawing shoals into the swim. For pike, try lures or wobbled baits along the reedy margins.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
