Willow Tree Island

Willow Tree Island is a proper secluded little venue on the River Great Ouse at Offord, with fishing on both the main river and a deep back stream. It’s LAA water, with around 30 swims and a cracking mix of roach, chub, bream, tench and the odd bigger surprise.

River level integration coming for this stretch.

The lowdown

  • The whole fishery is an island, so it feels nicely wild and tucked away from the usual riverside hustle.
  • You get over by pontoon across the back stream. The swims are only a short walk from there, with a good path running around the fishery.
  • The back stream is the real standout. It’s narrow, very deep tight to the bank and averages at least 9 feet. Proper roach water, especially when they’re on the munch.
  • Hemp and tares can produce good nets of roach at the right time. A steady trot or a well-presented bait in the deeper swims is the sort of game here.
  • The main river is shallower than the back stream. Upstream, the swims are wide and slow, with bream and tench on the cards.
  • Chub are worth a look around overhanging trees. Keep an eye on the crease and any slack-looking cover, as they’re often close to those trees.
  • The venue can also produce occasional double-figure barbel, so don’t assume every swim is just a roach and silvers job.
  • There are about 30 swims, all reasonably handy from the pontoon. Fishing is available on both sides of the island: main river and back stream.
  • The water is listed as bookable on Sundays in the 2024 LAA handbook. Night fishing is permitted, giving the island a different feel after dark.
  • Access is through the Offord and Buckden Angling Society field. Follow the track to the signed car park by the trees, then walk to the pontoon by the weir.

Methods: Trotting with hemp and tares is the obvious shout for roach in the deep back-stream swims. For the main river, try feeder tactics for bream and tench, or fish tight to overhanging trees for chub.

  • No more than five members may be on the pontoon at one time.
  • The pontoon must be locked back to the mainland after the last member leaves.
  • Visitors to LAA non-public-access fisheries must hold membership.
  • An Environment Agency rod licence is also required.
