The lowdown

  • This is a sizeable Tywi operation near Nantgaredig, with about 3 miles of Tywi fishing plus another mile on the River Cothi.
  • The three named Tywi beats are Llwchgwyn, Abercothi and Junction. They rotate daily, so your beat changes at 0700 each morning.
  • There are around 40 named pools in the fishery. Most sections usually hold fish throughout the season, which gives you plenty to go at.
  • Almost all the fishing is double-bank. The remainder is covered by a bank-share arrangement, so the exact fishing position depends on the booked water.
  • A maximum of five rods is allowed on each beat. That should help keep things fairly civilised, rather than turning the pools into a bun fight.
  • The water sits about four miles above the tide limit. Expect proper river character, with pools and moving water to work through rather than a uniform canal-like beat.
  • Sewin are the headline fish here. The fishery says large sea trout are common, with fish into double figures expected each year. Salmon are also recorded.
  • The season runs from 1 April to 17 October on the published day-ticket rates. April is the cheapest window, while June onwards is the premium period.
  • Fly fishing and spinning are both allowed, so you can choose your approach to suit the height, colour and mood of the river. Keep things mobile and cover the likely lies.
  • Dogs are welcome, but they must stay under control. Guests can use the Rod Rooms free of charge; the Fishing Lodge needs a special arrangement.

Methods: Fly fishing or spinning only. Pick your approach around the river height and colour, covering the pools and likely sewin lies rather than sitting on one spot all day.
