The lowdown
- This is wide, open Tywi water with a generally clean shingle riverbed. There are some bigger stones, rocks and the odd muddy bank, so sturdy wading kit is the order of the day.
- The beat has eight recognised salmon and sea-trout holding pools, giving you plenty of water to work through rather than just one or two obvious swims.
- It’s double-bank fishing, and riverside access is usually easy. At summer levels, you can often wade across at selected spots to reach fresh water.
- Cilsane is fly- or spinner-only, so leave the feeder gear at home. Work the pools properly, covering the crease, necks and softer inside water as the river changes height.
- The salmon and sea-trout season runs from 1 April to 17 October. Fishing starts at 07:00 on your permitted date and runs until 07:00 the following morning.
- Night fishing is available, but wading is required on the beat. It can be quite deep, so this is one for anglers who are properly comfortable in moving water after dark.
- The setting is a wide, pasture-dominated Tywi valley, away from main roads, with abundant birdlife and other wildlife. The wider Golden Grove fishings are overlooked by historic castle ruins.
- A full-time ghillie is available on the Golden Grove fishings. Contact Jamie Harries at least 24 hours before arriving, and enquiries can also cover bookings and guiding.
- It’s catch-and-release fishing. Salmon caught before 16 June and after 7 October must be returned, so check the current rules carefully before setting off.
Methods: Fly or spinner only. Cover the recognised pools methodically, keeping an eye on river height, wading depth and where the crease forms through the shingle runs.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
