The lowdown
- The Cwm Alis wood section is cracking trout and grayling water, with some excellent pools where sea trout can show.
- Sludgy pool run is a proper mixed bag. It’s described as good for salmon, trout and grayling, while the pool itself suits fly or spinning for salmon.
- Below Sludgy, the water is good for all species, so there’s plenty to have a poke around with as conditions change.
- The farm cottage pool is another belter for fly and spinning. Worth a look when you fancy a more defined pool rather than just working the runs.
- The Mill Run fishes best at medium water height for all species. That’s the sort of level where the stretch should really come into its own.
- Below the Mill is mainly trout and grayling water, giving you a more delicate game-fishing feel compared with the stronger salmon water elsewhere.
- The lower section can be good spinning water for salmon once the river is above 2 feet 3 inches. Keep an eye on river height before heading down there.
- Access is from the A5, down the drive to the club car park. The route crosses a field through a wicket gate and five-bar gate, so shut everything properly behind you.
- For the Mill beat, follow the track signposted from the car park. Don’t walk in front of the house or letting rooms, and take extra care around farmland, crops and livestock.
- There’s a real mix of approaches here: fly and spinning are specifically mentioned, with the different pools, glides and stronger water giving you room to chop and change.
Methods: Fly and spinning are the main named approaches, with salmon spinning particularly suited to the lower section when the river is above 2 feet 3 inches. Trout and grayling water dominates below the Mill, while the mixed pools and runs offer plenty of scope for adapting.
