Darlington Brown Trout AA North Bank – River Tees
The lowdown
- This is proper classic fly water between the High and Low Coniscliffe area, with the nearest identifiable village being Low Coniscliffe.
- The beat runs for approximately three miles along the north bank. A maximum of four tickets is listed per day, so it should feel nicely limited rather than rammed.
- Expect a mix of deep holding pools and long gravelly runs. That gives you options, whether you fancy searching the crease or covering fish in the shallower water.
- It’s described as exceptional water for free-rising fish. Keep the dry-fly box handy when the river starts showing its hand.
- Brown trout are the main game for much of the season. Spiders, nymphs and dry flies are all recommended approaches.
- Euro-nymphing is also marked down as an effective modern method. A 9–10ft trout rod rated #3/4/5 is the suggested setup.
- Salmon runs are principally from mid-August to October. For these, switch rods up to 14ft are suggested, with low-water doubles and tube flies.
- Winter grayling fishing is described as excellent, making this a proper year-round fly-water option rather than a one-season punt.
- Wading difficulty is rated average, but take a wading staff. The river has deeper holding water, so don’t go charging about when a careful read of the swim will do.
- Dogs aren’t allowed, and national fishing byelaws apply. Car-park capacities are given in the members’ handbook, while no public parking postcode or specific car-park name is listed on the holder’s website.
Methods: Fly fishing only. For trout and grayling, try spiders, nymphs, dry flies or Euro-nymphing; salmon anglers can use a switch rod up to 14ft with low-water doubles or tube flies.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
