Tees North – Meeting of the Waters

A cracking, broad and varied Tees beat on the Durham bank, centred on the Meeting of the Waters where the Greta joins the Tees. The Bay of Plenty pool sits just below the confluence, with wide, deep water and some proper river character.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is one of Darlington Fly Fishers Club’s premier fishing locations, and it’s easy to see why. The Meeting of the Waters is a cracking local landmark, with attractive Teesdale countryside all around.
  • The river is wide and deep around the confluence, with broad pools and runs to work out. It’s a proper change of gear from a small, intimate stream.
  • The pool below the Greta is known as the Bay of Plenty. Worth giving it a good look, especially where the flow lines and creases start to form.
  • Upstream offers the easier wading on the beat. Downstream is more challenging, so take your time and pick your route carefully.
  • The river bed is rocky, and the club strongly recommends carrying a wading staff. Bob on advice — especially when the water is pushing through the wider sections.
  • A longer rod can be useful where the river opens out. It should help with reach and line control across those broader stretches.
  • Fishing is artificial-fly only, with the club targeting wild brown trout and grayling. Migratory fish may also be present in the Tees.
  • The beat has a limited membership of approximately 40 rods, so it should have a quieter, less crowded feel than many day-ticket waters.
  • Brown trout fishing runs from 16 April to 30 September, while grayling fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March. Salmon and sea-trout season is listed as 1 February to 31 October.
  • Access, gates and parking details are kept in the Members Area, so sort those details before setting off. Members also need to complete the club’s catch return and follow current byelaws and club rules.

Methods: Artificial-fly only. A longer rod looks useful on the wide stretches, with careful wading and line control around the broad pools, runs and the Bay of Plenty.
