We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The fishery sits between Hunwick and Newfield on the River Wear in County Durham. FDAC runs the lot.
  • Newfield is approximately 950m, while the Hunwick section is approximately 180m. Plenty of bank to explore.
  • The water is mixed game-and-coarse fishing, with salmon, sea trout, trout and coarse fish listed by the club.
  • Access is through two gates marked on the club’s fishery map. The official access postcode is DL14 8DE.
  • That postcode points you towards the fishery gates rather than a named car park. Parking areas are marked on the club map, so don’t just chuck the motor anywhere.
  • The gates are shut from 8pm until 8am. Worth clocking that before planning an early start or a late finish.
  • Night fishing is allowed on FDAC River Wear waters, but it must be fly-only. A cheeky dusk session is fine within those rules.
  • Only one rod can be fished at a time, and all rods must be fished from the same peg. Keep it tidy and straightforward.
  • Barbless or micro-barbed hooks are required. No game fish can go in a keepnet, and no grayling may be taken.
  • The take-home limits are firm: no more than two brown trout in 24 hours, and three salmon and/or sea trout in a week. Dogs, fires, barbecues, alcohol, camping and bivvies are all banned at the river bank.

Methods: The checked details don’t set out specific daytime tactics. At night, the River Wear must be fished fly-only, with one rod from the same peg.
