We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • Access is via Kings Mills Lane, which DRAC says has recently been resurfaced. Parking is on the verge at the bottom of the lane, then it’s roughly 50–60 yards to the river.
  • Upstream, the remains of Kings Mills weir are the main feature. The centre is broken, with fast, shallow water running along a steep opposite bank.
  • There are deeper pegs on the old weir where chub and barbel turn up. Worth having a proper look before settling in — the flow changes around the broken section.
  • The deep slow corner upstream is a different kettle of fish, running approximately 12–14 feet deep. It produces bream, chub and pike, so there’s scope for more than just scratching around in the flow.
  • Downstream of the lane, the first field starts with a gravel riffle before dropping to around 8–10 feet near the old chain ferry. DRAC describes this as good barbel water.
  • The lower first-field water shallows to roughly 4–6 feet and is suited to summer stick-float fishing. Roach and dace are named here, so it’s a bob-on spot for a light, busy session in settled conditions.
  • The second field is short and sits above a couple of islands. The second field and the first 400 yards of the next field are fast, gravel-bottomed water — another proper barbel line.
  • Below the islands, the mill fleam re-enters the river. Further down, the Trent widens and slows towards Railway Bridge at Castle Donington.
  • A bit of colour and extra flow should suit the deeper and gravelly areas, while summer low-water conditions point towards the shallower stick-float water. Keep the approach mobile and fish the crease rather than charging straight into the fastest water.

Methods: Barbel anglers should work the deeper gravel water and old weir pegs with suitable tackle. For a lighter summer approach, trot a stick float through the 4–6 foot shallows for roach and dace; the deep slow corner also gives options for bream, chub and pike.

Key rules

  • Fishing is for DRAC members holding the appropriate membership, and anglers must carry their membership card and Environment Agency rod licence.
  • Fishing times follow DRAC’s published month-by-month club timetable, except where night fishing is allowed. A maximum of two rods is permitted on ordinary club waters.
  • Live bait is strictly forbidden. All fish must be returned to the water, and fishing from boats is not permitted.
  • No dogs or guns are allowed. No fires, barbecues, tents or camping between fishing sessions are allowed.
  • Remove litter and leave the peg and bank clean. Specimen anglers targeting barbel or pike must use suitable landing nets and unhooking mats.
  • Fishing is prohibited within 30 metres of overhead electric power lines.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
