River Trent — Catton and Walton-on-Trent
A proper mixed-fish River Trent venue run by Burton Mutual Angling Association, covering the Walton and Catton stretches near Walton-on-Trent. Expect strong flow, everything from fast 2.5ft shallows to pools around 10ft, and a cracking choice of methods — though it can be a hard river to tame.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The official BMAA venue name is “River Trent — Walton on Trent and Catton”. It’s split into Walton and Catton water, with a short gap between them and no access between the two stretches.
- BMAA rents only the Walton bank. The Walton section sits roughly half a mile south of Walton village on Catton Road, with the entrance gate on the right at the bottom of Borough Hill.
- The Walton upper boundary is about 200 metres upstream. The lower boundary finishes at the fence beside the road near Walton.
- This is proper varied Trent water. Fast shallows run at approximately 2.5 feet, while the stronger pools drop to around 10 feet. There’s plenty of flow to think about.
- The stretch holds carp, barbel, chub, bream, roach, dace and perch. A decent mixed bag is on the cards when conditions line up.
- BMAA says it suits all methods, so trotting, feeder work and other approaches all have a place. Pick the swim and tackle around the pace and depth in front of you.
- The river fishes in both summer and winter conditions. Summer weed can be a proper nuisance, though, and BMAA warns it may lead to lost tackle.
- On the Catton side, vehicles can reach virtually all pegs, with parking behind most of them. Leave room for other vehicles, keep estate locks shut and stay by the river rather than wandering across the surrounding land.
- A nearby eventing field can cause disturbance. BMAA flags 13–15 July and 23 September as dates members may want to avoid.
- It’s a controlled venue, not a wander-in job. No night fishing, no dogs, no close-season access, and under-16s need an accompanying adult.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: BMAA describes the venue as suitable for all methods. Match the approach to the pace: trotting the steadier water, or using feeder tackle when the flow and deeper pools call for something more anchored.
