We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper estate fishing, with the river winding through the Chatsworth Park setting between Baslow and Rowsley. Scenic stuff, and a lovely change of pace from busy day-ticket waters.
- You get approximately four miles of fishing, with both banks available. That gives you plenty of water to explore rather than being boxed into a short run of pegs.
- The fishery offers fly fishing, with trout available from 1 April to 7 October. So the main trout window runs through spring, summer and early autumn.
- Grayling fishing is available from 1 July to 28 February, giving the stretch a longer season for anglers keen to keep fishing once the trout period has finished.
- End of May and June is the estate’s peak mayfly period. That’s the standout point in the calendar for matching the hatch and getting involved in some proper fly-fishing action.
- Guest fishing is tied to a stay at a Chatsworth Estate hotel or cottage. The package needs a minimum two-night stay and includes one day’s permit, plus an introduction and guidance from the resident River Keeper.
- Only three fishing tickets are sold per day through the guest package. That keeps things nicely limited, so there’s no mad scramble for a swim or faff over crowded banks.
- You’ll need to bring your own fishing gear. An Environment Agency rod licence is also required, and it isn’t included in the package.
- Membership is another route in. Members get use of the fishery, exclusive use of a fishing hut and six full-day guest tickets, although the estate says the waiting list may be two or three years.
Methods: Fly fishing is the stated approach here, with trout and grayling seasons clearly set out. The resident River Keeper provides an introduction and guidance with the guest package, which is bob on if you’re new to the water.
