Lower Severals & Avon Castle, River Avon (Hampshire), Dorset–Hampshire boundary
Lower Severals & Avon Castle gives you roughly three-quarters of a mile of the Hampshire Avon under Ringwood & District Anglers Association. A winding stretch with trees and a millstream junction, it’s a cracking one to size up for barbel, chub and roach.

The lowdown
- You’ve got approximately three-quarters of a mile across the combined fishery. The upstream boundary adjoins Severals Fishery, so get the club map out and keep those boundaries bob on before settling into a swim.
- The map shows a winding river with adjoining trees. That gives you features to assess rather than choosing a peg blind: look at how the flow runs around each bend before deciding where to put a bait.
- The Bickerley Millstream junction is marked too. It’s a useful feature to investigate; if there’s a visible crease, consider how you could present a float or feeder along it without dragging your tackle across different currents.
- Barbel, chub, dace and roach are named for the fishery, with grayling, pike, perch and eels also listed. That’s plenty of scope for choosing an approach around the fish you fancy targeting.
- Bream, carp and tench are described as occasional catches. Think of those as a possible bonus rather than the whole reason to pack the gear — the club’s wording is worth keeping in mind.
- The coarse season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Trout and salmon fishing is permitted in season at Avon Castle only, so don’t treat the combined fishery as having identical permissions throughout.
- Ordinary hours start one hour before sunrise and finish two hours after sunset. A night permit brings separate evening cut-offs, not an all-night session. Sort your finishing time before getting comfortable on the bank.
- Parking is marked beside Hampshire Hatches Lane, with access at what3words straws.pipes.forgiving. Bring the club key, stick to the riverbanks rather than cutting across fields, and leave proper clearance around overhead cables.
Methods: Trotting or a feeder are sensible approaches to consider for the named coarse species, choosing your presentation after checking the flow in front of you. If you fancy spinning, the permitted window is 1 September to 14 March.
