Lower Winkton, River Avon (Hampshire), Dorset
Lower Winkton is Christchurch Angling Club’s stretch of the Hampshire Avon in Dorset, with weedier shallows upstream and deeper holes downstream. Most of it is lightly fished, apart from the water immediately below Winkton Weir.
Run by Christchurch Angling Club · checked 5 Oct 2026 · boundaries only partly described by the club
The lowdown
- There’s a proper change in character along this stretch: weedier shallows upstream, deeper holes downstream. That’s the main feature to keep in mind when choosing where to fish, rather than treating every swim alike.
- Immediately below Winkton Weir is the exception to the lightly fished picture. Most of Lower Winkton sees less attention, so don’t assume the water nearest the weir is the whole story here.
- The coarse-fish line-up is cracking: barbel, chub, roach, dace, bream, perch, pike and eels are all named. Grayling feature too, giving this stretch a varied roll call without needing to promise what’s on the munch.
- There’s game fishing as well, with brown trout, salmon and sea trout listed. This isn’t an all-year venue, though, so check the club’s opening arrangements before building a trip around either coarse or game fishing.
- Parking is described off Stony Lane, with a public footpath leading towards the river. The Christchurch bank can also be reached via Marsh Lane, and access uses a club lock — get that sorted before heading down.
- Keep an eye on the downstream boundary: Lower Winkton adjoins the Royalty Fishery, but that’s a separate stretch. Being next door doesn’t make it part of your Lower Winkton fishing, so keep the two distinct.
- This is a daylight outing, with no night fishing and no toilets provided. Dogs aren’t allowed either. A maximum of two rods keeps the tackle limit straightforward, and braided mainline is expressly permitted.
- No public day tickets here. Membership or an accompanied guest ticket is the route in; holiday membership must be bought before entering. For guests, stick to the current allowance of one guest per member daily.
Methods: Use the contrast between upstream weedier shallows and downstream deeper holes to guide your swim choice. Braided mainline is allowed, but spinners, spoons and Devon minnows are prohibited when lure fishing for coarse fish or pike.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
