Hammoon Stretch

Hammoon is a quiet, lightly fished stretch on the middle Dorset Stour, just west of Hammoon. It’s a long run of generally shallow, streamy swims, with chub the main draw and plenty of room for exploratory coarse fishing.

The lowdown

  • This is one of SHAA’s least-frequented river areas, so it could be a proper quiet one if you fancy getting away from busy pegs.
  • Only the right-hand bank is available. Keep that in mind when checking access and setting up, as there’s no fishing from the opposite side.
  • The stretch is long, with generally shallow, streamy swims rather than big, deep holding holes. It should suit anglers who enjoy working a river rather than parking on one obvious feature.
  • Float trotting is a natural fit here. Search the crease, trot likely lines and keep the bait moving nicely through the flow.
  • Quiver-tipping is also specifically mentioned. A light feeder approach could be handy when the current is pushing or the fish are sitting a little deeper.
  • Chub are the standout target. Perch, pike, roach, rudd and tench are also present, giving you a decent mix of coarse-fishing options.
  • Thick weed growth can be a problem in many swims. Have a good look before committing, and expect to spend a bit of time finding a clean line.
  • The quiet character makes this a good exploratory stretch. Move carefully, cover water and don’t assume every swim has the same depth or flow.
  • There’s limited verge parking near the farm entrance. The access lane has tight bends, and vehicles must not obstruct gateways or lanes, so take it steady and park considerately.
  • Fishing is from sunrise until one hour after sunset only. That rules out night fishing, but leaves plenty of daylight for a proper wander and a few cheeky chub swims.

Methods: Float trotting and quiver-tipping are the named approaches here. Work the streamy swims, keep looking for cleaner gaps through the weed and search the crease rather than settling straight away.
