Throop Beat 2 — New Weir to Blackwater Bridge
The lowdown
- Beat 2 covers the run from New Weir down to Blackwater Bridge at Throop. Nice and clear boundaries, so no faffing about wondering where the beat starts or finishes.
- The wider Throop Fishery has more than five miles of fishable water, plus side streams. This ticket also covers Beats 1 and 3 and the Lower Stour.
- The named fish list is a decent one: barbel, chub, dace, roach, perch, bream, eels and pike. The Mill Pool adds carp and tench, though it sits outside the game-fishing permit.
- For coarse anglers, the season runs from 16 June to 14 March. No fishing is allowed in the Mill Pool during the closed season.
- A current Environment Agency rod licence is needed, and day tickets allow a maximum of two rods. Handy for switching between a feeder and a float setup.
- There is no entry before 6:30am. Closing times change through the year, from 11:15pm in June and 10:30pm in July to 9:30pm from September through March.
- Gated access needs a club key. Collect one from Ringwood Tackle in Ringwood or Bournemouth Fishing Lodge, then use the permitted parking areas only.
- Parking is available off-road at Throop Mill, with extra areas off some side roads. Keep to the footpaths and avoid shortcuts.
- The usual Throop rules apply: no bivvies, tents, fires, bathing or boating, plus quiet arrivals and departures. Watch the overhead powerlines carefully and stay at least 20 metres away.
- There are no guest tickets on Beat 2. Night-permit holders get no concession here, so check the right ticket before heading down.
Methods: A mixed bag of float, feeder and ledger options should suit the named coarse species, with barbel and chub likely to make the flowing water interesting. Trout and salmon are available in season, but only with a game-fishing ticket.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
