Becketts

Becketts is a proper little roving stretch on the River Stour, downstream of Buggs and tucked into open Dorset countryside. Two short sections offer chub, dace and bigger fish, with island access possible when conditions behave.

Nearest EA gauge we've matched — it isn't on this stretch, so levels on your peg will differ.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a roving specimen-style fishery rather than a tidy row of identical pegs. Expect two short sections and plenty of water to explore.
  • The shallow, weedy bits can be hard work in summer, but they keep producing chub and dace throughout the year. Don’t ignore them.
  • Chub are listed to 7lb-plus, with roach to 2lb-plus. That’s enough to make a quiet wander with a light setup well worth the faff.
  • Pike to 15lb-plus are on the club’s list too, so keep an eye on deeper-looking water and any darker edges as you move along.
  • The river sits in open countryside, giving the stretch a proper natural feel. It’s a water for looking, moving and picking the likely swim.
  • Island fishing may be possible when conditions permit. If access isn’t suitable, stay on the bank — no heroics needed.
  • In summer, the weed and shallow flow can make presentation awkward. A mobile approach and carefully chosen swims should help you pick through it.
  • The shallows produce chub and dace year-round, so trotting or light float work is a sensible starting point when the river is carrying a friendly pace.
  • For specimen hunting, cover likely features with a roving approach rather than settling in straight away. Keep your eyes open for depth changes and steadier water.
  • Access is through a path and gate from River Lane in Charlton Marshall. Park safely in River Lane, but never at the end, which is private land. Keep the river closed season firmly in mind.

Methods: A mobile roving approach suits the water nicely, with trotting or light float work for the shallow chub and dace. For bigger fish, work likely features carefully and switch attention to pike water when appropriate.

Key rules

  • The river closed season is enforced.
  • Follow WDAC’s general fishing rules in the club handbook.
  • Game fishing for trout and sea trout is covered by the handbook rules.
  • Fishing from the island is only possible when conditions permit.
  • When island access is unsuitable, remain on the bank.
