Eccliffe (Downstream of Mill Pool)

A long, varied River Stour stretch downstream of Eccliffe Mill Pool, with bends, changing depths and plenty of roach and dace. It’s a bit overgrown in places, but there are some cracking swims above the concrete bridge and a proper walk to the lower water.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a long bit of river, running downstream from Eccliffe Mill Pool to the paddock opposite Burghey Trout Pools.
  • The depth changes about, with bends and plenty of features to pick apart. Proper river water rather than a neat, tidy match stretch.
  • It isn’t match fished these days, mainly because the banks have become overgrown. That does mean some swims feel a bit tucked away.
  • A little swim clearing has started between Duck Island and the concrete bridge, so that section should be easier to get at.
  • There are two swims above the concrete bridge described as excellent. They hold roach and dace, with the odd chub and grayling mixed in.
  • Below the bridge, the swims contain lots of roach and dace too. Chub show, along with occasional big perch and grayling.
  • Stick float and maggot fishing are the association’s recommended approaches throughout. Bob on for working the varying depths and bends.
  • Parking is limited. You can use roadside pull-offs near Eccliffe Mill, or park by the concrete bridge, but don’t block working gates.
  • The lower swims involve a long walk, so travel light and expect a bit of faff getting down there. The quiet, overgrown feel is part of the appeal.
  • Fishing is available during the course-fishing season, from 16 June to 15 March. A current Environment Agency rod licence is also required.

Methods: A stick float and maggot approach should cover plenty of the water, especially for roach and dace. Pick apart the bends and varying depths, then switch attention to the chub, perch and grayling swims.

Key rules

  • River day tickets are available during the course-fishing season, from 16 June to 15 March.
  • A current Environment Agency rod licence is required when fishing association waters.
  • Anglers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Park carefully and do not block working gates.
  • The official stretch page does not state night-fishing permission for this water.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
