Havelins

Havelins is a cracking mile of Dorset Stour at Upper Stourpaine, run by Ringwood & District Anglers Association. It’s mainly 8–10ft deep, with the lower half nicely tucked away from the wind by the high opposite bank.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is roughly a mile of proper Dorset Stour, with the upstream end joining onto Hanford Fishery.
  • Depth is mainly 8–10ft, so there’s enough water for a good mix of coarse-fishing approaches.
  • The lower half gets the best shelter. The high opposite bank takes the edge off a cheeky wind and should make things more comfortable.
  • Look for the usual river clues: any crease, change in pace or slightly steadier glide is worth a good look.
  • Roach, chub, bream, perch, pike, eels and carp are all named by the association across its waters.
  • The coarse-fishing season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Sunrise until two hours after sunset keeps things nicely straightforward.
  • Trotting or a light feeder should cover the bread-and-butter work, with the depth giving you plenty of water to search.
  • A float set-up is a bob-on starting point for roach, perch and chub. For bream or carp, a more settled feeder approach could be the ticket.
  • It’s described as a beautiful setting, but access needs care: use designated parking, keep the Trailway clear and leave gates as you find them.
  • There are overhead powerlines nearby. Keep well clear and fish at least 20 metres from the cables, as the association recommends.

Methods: Try trotting the steadier water for roach, perch and chub, then switch to a feeder when you want to pin a bait down in the 8–10ft depth. Carp, bream and pike give you options for a more targeted session.

Key rules

  • Coarse-fishing season is 16 June to 14 March.
  • Fishing is from sunrise to two hours after sunset.
  • Use designated parking areas only.
  • Do not block the Trailway.
  • Close gates, or leave them as you found them.
  • Take care around overhead powerlines.
  • The association recommends fishing at least 20 metres from overhead cables.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
