New Road – Dorset Stour
New Road is a productive, picturesque bit of the Dorset Stour run by Christchurch Angling Club. It’s a proper chub and barbel stretch, with quieter swims, a weir, bridge, deeper water and plenty of room to explore.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The car-park bank has a few pegs inside the compound, continuing down towards the bridge. Handy access, and no huge faff getting onto the water.
- Across the river, the far bank fishes downstream for a short way, or upstream past the weir. Don’t fish from the bridge or weir, mind.
- Upstream of the bridge the bank opens out beneath grazing land, with numerous accessible pegs. The club says angling pressure is light, so there’s scope to find your own bit of river.
- The upper section turns slower and deeper as the banks steepen. In there, the main flow pushes down the near side, making the crease well worth a look.
- Large chub and barbel are the headline targets. Specimen roach, dace, bream, carp and pike are also mentioned across the fishery overview.
- A bit of colour and steady water should suit feeder work for barbel and bream. When the river settles, trotting the glides for chub, roach and dace is the bob-on approach.
- The venue is listed as open all year, but the general coarse-river season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Follow the applicable species and Environment Agency rules.
- There’s game fishing available too, with brown trout and sea trout named by the club. Night fishing isn’t available on this stretch.
- Parking is directly off New Road in the Bridge Place cul-de-sac. Members can use the Clubmate app for SatNav guidance to access points and parking.
- No toilets are listed. Up to two rods are allowed, and the club says guests can be brought along where its guest-ticket conditions are met.
Methods: Trotting, feeder fishing and sensible float work should cover the main options here. Fish the crease and deeper near-side flow for barbel, while quieter glides and steadier margins are worth a look for chub and silverfish.
