River Avon (Hampshire)
Bisterne Fishery, Hampshire Avon
The lowdown
- There are three fishing beats at Bisterne, so this isn’t just one little corner of the Avon. The estate offers both coarse and game fishing, with enquiries going through Lynn Coombes.
- Swim variety is a proper part of the appeal here: Christchurch Angling Club describes plenty of it. That’s the useful headline, rather than banking on a particular depth, flow or named peg.
- Barbel and chub are the principal quarry. Bream, dace, eels, grayling, perch, pike and roach are also listed for Bisterne, giving the fishery a nicely mixed line-up beyond those two headline fish.
- Get the calendar bob on before planning a coarse session. The published windows are 1 August–31 October and 1 February–14 March, rather than access throughout the whole coarse-fishing season.
- Public day-ticket fishing is confirmed by CAC, but there’s a wrinkle worth sorting first. An older estate page carries a closure notice dated 7 November 2023, so check present access before travelling.
- For CAC members, the estate agreement provides six coarse rods daily. Tickets must be collected from Ringwood Tackle on the fishing day before entry, and members get a maximum of 12 visits per membership year.
- Keep an eye on the clock if using the CAC arrangement: entry starts at 7am and departure is due by one hour after sunset. Night fishing isn’t allowed, so no settling in overnight.
- Access needs a little care, too. Downstream of the keeper’s cottage, driving stops at the salmon hut, with parking beside the track. Alternatively, park where indicated at Week farmyard and walk; there are no toilets.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Barbel and chub are the main focus for a coarse session. CAC allows braided mainline and a maximum of two rods, but bans livebait, spinners, spoons and Devon minnows for pike fishing.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
