Burgate House Fishery, Hampshire Avon

Burgate House Fishery is a members-only Salisbury & District Angling Club stretch on the middle Hampshire Avon, upstream of Fordingbridge. A substantial carrier, main-river gravel runs and a deep bend pool give it a cracking mix of water.

The lowdown

  • This is a stretch with two distinct halves. The upper half follows a substantial secondary channel, or carrier, while the lower half joins the main Avon. Plenty of contrast in one fishery.
  • The carrier is more than a little side stream. The club describes it as a refuge for fish when the main river runs high — a useful feature to bear in mind when river levels rise.
  • Down on the main channel, a deep pool sits on a bend. That gives you a proper contrast with the faster gravel water elsewhere, rather than a stretch of much-the-same swims.
  • Other sections have fast, broad gravel runs. Alongside that deeper bend, they give the fishery its varied character, with swims the club specifically describes as suitable for both trotting and legering.
  • The shallow riffles hold wild trout, and the club mentions opportunities for wading. Worth knowing if that style of river fishing appeals; get the club’s maps and rules before sorting your approach.
  • Chub, barbel, dace, roach and perch are all named for Burgate House. It’s a mixed river line-up, with both float and leger options rather than just one method to build your day around.
  • Winter pike fishing gets a proper mention from the club, which describes it as productive. Both static and roving approaches feature, so there’s scope for settling into a swim or keeping on the move.
  • There’s also a shorter eastern section on the true left bank, giving access opposite Burgate Manor. Check the member map for the layout, and don’t treat the Burgate village postcode as confirmed angler parking.

Methods: Trotting and legering both have suitable swims here, with fast gravel runs and a deep bend pool providing contrasting water. For winter pike, the club mentions both static and roving approaches.
