Sopley Mill Stream, Hampshire Avon
The lowdown
- There’s a proper mix of water here: gravel shallows, deeper glides and cover along the far bank. Plenty of variety to think about when choosing your swim, rather than one uniform run.
- Trotting is the clear starting point. The club specifically describes suitable water for it, so this is a stretch to have on your radar if working a float through a glide is your thing.
- One handy detail: the stream can remain fishable when the main Avon floods. That’s a useful distinction, though “can” is the important bit — it isn’t a promise of fishable water every time.
- The named fish make an interesting mix, with barbel, chub, bream, roach, perch and pike among them. Dace, eels and grayling are listed too, alongside brown trout, salmon and sea trout.
- Getting there means approaching from the B3347 and following signs for Sopley Mill near the Woolpack. The car park is opposite Sopley Church, with secure parking close to the water.
- Don’t expect the lower stretch to be a trainers job. Access can be boggy, there are small carriers to cross, and waders or wellingtons are usually needed in places.
- Access uses a club lock, and there are no toilets. Sort your membership arrangements before heading down, leave the dog at home, and bear those practical bits in mind when planning your session.
- Keep an eye on the signs around the mill: fishing directly facing it is prohibited. The fishery also sits within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so this is a special bit of river.
Methods: Trotting is the club-backed approach here, with suitable float water among the shallows and deeper glides. For coarse-fish or pike lure fishing, leave spinners, spoons and Devon minnows out of the tackle bag — they’re prohibited.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
