We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Two private beats make up the fishery, both north of Stockbridge in classic Hampshire chalk-stream country.
- You get approximately half a mile of single-bank fishing, with a maximum of two rods allowed on each beat. Nice and quiet, then.
- The water is gin-clear, so this is all about spotting fish, keeping your head down and making tidy casts. Proper visual fishing.
- It’s fly fishing only rather than coarse-fishing access. The beats are described as suitable for stalking and sight-casting.
- The estate rates the fishing as low difficulty, making this a gentler introduction to private-estate River Test fishing.
- Beat 1 has a fishing hut, plus an outdoor area for relaxing and barbecues. Handy for stretching the day out a bit.
- Hamper lunches or on-bank catering can be arranged in advance. A very civilised touch, especially if you’re making a full day of it.
- The main season runs from the beginning of May to mid-October. That gives you a broad chalk-stream window, with the clear water demanding a careful approach.
- Wading isn’t allowed, so work from the bank and make the most of the sight-fishing opportunities. Easy car access to the river banks keeps the faff down.
- If you’re taking fish home, the estate asks you to stick to one and a half brace per day. Anything under 2 lb must go back.
Methods: Fly fishing is the game here, with stalking and sight-casting the obvious approach in the gin-clear water. Keep things controlled from the bank, watch the fish and make the first cast count.
