We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a long beat on the River Test, with plenty of river to get stuck into rather than just a handful of swims.
  • Fishing is double-bank for nearly the full length, and the river’s wide enough to work the opposite bank without too much interference.
  • There’s a good mix of deep pools and quick riffles, giving you different water to pick apart through the day.
  • Shaded cover on the far bank helps encourage fish to rise, so keep an eye on the surface whenever the conditions look right.
  • The open bank sections give you room for back casting, which is a real result on a chalk stream when you’re trying to present a fly cleanly.
  • It’s described as suitable for trout during the main season, with fishing available from August 1 to October 24.
  • From November 1 to January 31, the beat switches to grayling fishing, giving you a cheeky winter option on the Test.
  • The beat suits two to four rods, while a party of four can book exclusive use. Handy if you want the place to yourselves.
  • River keeper Nick Parker maintains the banks and fringes, and his preferred flies are available through an honesty box.
  • Parking is beside the river and there’s a fishing cabin provided. The stretch is on the Stockbridge-to-Romsey road, close to Mottisfont. Dogs are allowed on the listing.

Methods: Fly fishing is the obvious game here, with trout on the main-season booking and grayling through the winter period. Work the deep pools, riffles and shaded far-bank cover, making the most of the open sections for a clean back cast.
