We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is the Greyhound’s own river beat, sitting right by Stockbridge and immediately upstream of the famous Houghton Club water.
  • The stretch adjoins the Houghton Club’s Bends Beat, so you’re in a well-known bit of Test country here. Proper classic chalk-stream stuff.
  • It’s a clear River Test carrier, with a beautiful hatch pool as one of the standout features. Worth taking your time and watching the water before wading in.
  • Double-bank fishing is available, giving you a bit more freedom to work the crease, glides and edges rather than being pinned to one side.
  • The beat suits one or two rods, which keeps things nicely quiet and focused. No crowded-match feel — just a tidy, private session.
  • Novices are well catered for, too. There’s plenty of room for the back cast, handy when you’re getting your dry-fly game together.
  • The named fish are sizeable brown trout and sizeable rainbow trout. A proper chance of a cheeky Test trout if conditions line up.
  • There’s a private riverside fishing hut with a fridge, coffee machine, kettle, tea and coffee. Bob on for a brew between swims.
  • The hut also has a barbecue and fire pit. For something more substantial, the adjoining Greyhound offers food and drink, plus halfway drinks and supper from the inn’s menu on the private riverside patio.
  • It’s a lovely clear-water sort of place, so a careful dry-fly approach feels right in settled conditions. Keep an eye on the hatch pool and be ready to cover showing fish.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: A classic chalk-stream approach should fit the beat nicely: careful observation, dry fly around the hatch pool and accurate presentations to cruising trout. With plenty of room for the back cast, it’s also a friendly spot for novices learning the ropes.
