We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Beat Three is around 540 metres, tucked between two River Test carriers and the water meadows. Sounds like a lovely bit of chalk-stream water, with plenty of room to explore.
- Beat Four runs for roughly 650 metres and brings deeper water, tight meanders and secluded fishing. A cracking choice if you fancy a quieter, more intimate swim.
- Beat Five is another 650-metre beat, mixing open water meadow with a shaded, winding section. That change of character should keep things interesting through the day.
- Beat Seven has two narrow parallel carriers joining at the bottom, with about 870 metres of bank fishing. Proper feature-filled water, and likely one for keeping your eyes peeled.
- Beat Nine is approximately 580 metres and described as wild and secluded. Ideal for anglers who like their river fishing a little more tucked away.
- Beat Ten measures around 510 metres, with willow-lined banks, and can be fished from either side. Handy if one bank is playing awkwardly or the light is wrong.
- Beat Eleven is roughly 670 metres and has even had a starring role on BBC TV’s Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. A nice bit of river heritage, that.
- Trout fishing runs from the start of May through mid-October. Once that window closes, grayling fishing takes over from mid-October through to mid-March.
- The estate describes the fishing as tranquil chalk-stream sport through water meadows and a picturesque village. Expect classic Test surroundings rather than a rough-and-ready river session.
Methods: This is chalk-stream fishing for trout and grayling, with the beat character changing from deeper meanders and shaded winding water to narrow carriers and willow-lined banks. Pick the approach around the water in front of you and the season you’re fishing.
