River Wye – Symonds Yat – Beats 1 & 2

Newport Angling Association’s Beats 1 and 2 at Symonds Yat offer day-ticket Wye fishing with proper depth, shallow rapids and a cracking mix of coarse fish. Feeder fishing is popular, but most swims leave plenty of room for a float approach too.

The lowdown

  • There’s a handy mix of water here: depths across the fishery average 6–8 feet, while the southern end has shallow rapids. It’s not all one sort of swim, which gives you a bit to think about before settling in.
  • Beat 1 takes in two fields upstream of St Dubricious Church. The brook immediately above the church frontage marks its end, so keep that landmark in mind rather than carrying on along the bank.
  • Beat 2 runs from below Sterretts Caravan Park to the island-head rapids below Royal Lodge. Those are your key landmarks for this part of the day-ticket water — worth getting straight before unpacking the kit.
  • Opposite Saracens Head, the fishery reaches 12 feet deep: a proper contrast with the shallow rapids. There’s a timing restriction here too, with no fishing in front of Saracens Head before 8am.
  • Feeder fishing is a popular choice, and most swims also suit float fishing. You’re not tied to one approach, so there’s good reason to keep both options in mind when sorting your tackle.
  • The association names barbel, chub, dace, perch, pike and roach for its Symonds Yat water. That’s a nice spread of coarse-fishing options, rather than a stretch described around just one target fish.
  • Watch the seasonal boundary between River Wye Caravan & Camping Park’s canoe ramps. That 120-metre section only opens from November 1 to March 14; it isn’t available throughout the rest of the year.
  • A couple of practical bits save a faff: banks can be steep, and garden-frontage pegs need the owner’s permission. The advertised 1¾ miles covers the overall fishery, not a separately stated length for Beats 1 and 2.

Methods: Feeder fishing is popular here, while most swims also suit float fishing. With average depths of 6–8 feet and deeper water opposite Saracens Head, there’s a proper contrast with the shallow southern rapids.
