Marford Farm — River Lea
Marford Farm is one of Verulam Angling Club’s most popular River Lea fisheries, tucked beneath Wheathampstead about five miles north of St Albans. It’s a proper two-part stretch, with tidy pegged swims on the Short Walk and a wilder, more searching Long Walk.

The lowdown
- There are two main areas to get your head around: the Short Walk and the Long Walk. They fish quite differently, which keeps things interesting.
- Short Walk swims 1–13 make up the first beat, with purpose-built pegged swims and a more organised feel. Handy if you like knowing exactly where you’re setting up.
- Short Walk swims 14–19 form the second beat. This section is generally shallower, so it may suit lighter float work and careful watercraft.
- The Long Walk is the natural one. Expect sweeping bends, overhanging trees, deep pools and shallow glides — classic upper Lea stuff with plenty to pick apart.
- It’s a venue for both pleasure and specimen anglers. Barbel into double figures are reported, while the chub are known for being proper hard fighters.
- There are quality dace, roach approaching 3 lb and large perch too. Occasional double-figure carp are reported, with carp listed throughout the Long Walk.
- Float fishing and trotting are both suitable. Look for the crease, the glide and any steady run where fish can sit out of the main push.
- Feeder fishing and legering are also on the menu, especially when the river has a bit of colour or the flow is carrying food through.
- The Long Walk rewards anglers who keep moving and search for fish rather than camping on one peg all day. Keep your kit tidy and stay mobile.
- Fishing must be from the designated pegged swims where the fishery rules require it. There are special regulations and specific permitted fishing times, so check the club details before setting off.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: A cracking all-round river venue for trotting, float fishing, feeder work and legering. On the Long Walk, keep moving, cover the pools and glides, and search out the fish rather than waiting for them to come to you.
