Rye House — River Lea

Rye House is a wide, canalised River Lea/Lee Navigation stretch near Hoddesdon, run by the London Anglers Association. It’s towpath fishing with a generally slow flow, plenty of canal-style water and a cracking reputation for perch and chub around the wider Rye House area.

The lowdown

  • The boundary runs from Rye House road bridge upstream to Cranbourne Bend, also known as October Hole. Notice boards mark the fishery limits, so it’s worth checking you’re in the right bit before setting up.
  • This is proper accessible Lea Valley fishing rather than a tucked-away rural job. The towpath is shared with walkers and cyclists, so keep gear tidy and give people plenty of room.
  • The water is wide and canalised, with a steady, generally slow flow. That makes it well suited to controlled float work, feeder fishing and picking apart the crease near features.
  • A concrete bridge with a water inlet adds extra depth and creates a useful predator feature. It’s the sort of spot worth working carefully with a lure or drop-shot rig.
  • Perch are a big draw here. The LAA mentions a good reputation for big perch and reports fish over 4lb upstream of the stretch, so don’t overlook the margins and deeper features.
  • Chub are also in the frame, with lure, spinner and drop-shot tactics mentioned for perch and chub. A cheeky chub can turn up when you’re least expecting it.
  • Slow trotting is suggested, while bream, carp and tench are regularly associated with this canal-style venue in summer. Roach are present too, though cormorant pressure has affected the fishing.
  • Access is via Rye House, Rye Road and the towpath before the river bridge. Parking is permitted where suitable, with the LAA handbook identifying the first 100 yards of towpath — but don’t block access or the roads.
  • Do not enter the adjoining former watercress-bed land. Rye House Gatehouse, Rye House Quay and Rye House railway station are useful nearby landmarks.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Slow trotting, feeder work and careful feature fishing all fit the steady canal-style water. For perch and chub, try lure, spinner or drop-shot tactics around the concrete bridge, inlet and deeper water.
