We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The beat sits within Lancaster & District Angling Association’s five miles of River Lune fishing. The association has been going for over 100 years, so this is a well-established bit of water.
- There are eight named salmon pools to get your head around: Barn Stream, Railway Bank, Masons, Lower Masons, Haystacks, Deeps, Fence End and Scots Wife.
- A downloadable map shows the beat boundaries. Worth having it to hand before setting off, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the Caton water.
- This is proper migratory-fish country, with salmon and sea-trout fishing alongside brown trout. The river levels matter, so check them before booking rather than having a cheeky punt.
- Spinning and worm fishing are only allowed when the Caton gauge is above 1 foot 6 inches — that’s above the red band on the gauge markers.
- Salmon worm fishing comes with a circle-hook rule. Prawn and shrimp fishing are banned outright, so leave those methods at home.
- The fishing day runs from 08:00 to 22:00 on your ticket date. Tickets are weekday-only, with no official night-fishing provision listed.
- Seasonally, salmon run from 1 February to 31 October, migratory trout from 1 April to 30 September, and non-migratory brown trout from 15 March to 30 September.
- Every angler needs an effective unhooking device, and all salmon must go back alive. Carry your current Environment Agency rod licence too.
- There’s no dedicated beat parking listed, but riverside access and public picnic/car-park facilities are available nearby around Bull Beck and Crook o’ Lune.
Methods: The rules specifically allow spinning and worm fishing once the Caton gauge is above the stated level. The named salmon pools are the places to focus your watercraft, while the map and river level check are bob-on bits of prep before booking.
