We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is one of three Lune Rivers Trust beats on the lower River Lune, close to Halton village. The water sits on Environment Agency-owned fishing beats.
  • The beat starts 50 yards below Forge Weir and runs downstream to Denny Beck. Parking is available beside Denny Beck Bridge on the Millennium Cycleway, so access is fairly bob on.
  • Three main holding pools are the big draw. They’re described as fishing well to the fly, with the deeper holding water typical of these Halton beats.
  • The pools should give you a few proper ambush spots, especially when the river carries a bit of colour or the flow pushes food into the crease. Keep an eye on the water rather than charging straight in.
  • It’s game-fishing water, with trout available in the wider Lune system. Salmon and sea trout are also part of the wider Lune picture, while coarse fishing is available across the Trust’s managed beats.
  • Before 16 June, it’s fly-only. Once the Halton Toll Bridge gauge is above 15 inches, all legal methods are allowed, opening the door to other approaches when conditions suit.
  • The lower river can be a cracking place for a searching fly, especially around the pool heads, tails and softer edges. When methods open up, trotting or a feeder could come into play where the rules and flow allow.
  • There are eight rods available each day, so booking ahead is the sensible move. Day tickets go through the linked iBookfishing booking system, with the calendar showing the current price.
  • Stay sharp on the bank rules: no wading or fishing beyond the river’s central line on the Halton beats, except in the area between Old Halton Toll Bridge and Halton Weir.
  • A catch return is strongly encouraged after fishing. Permit income goes back into river and angling-community benefits, including funding such as a disabled fishing platform.

Methods: Fly fishing is the main game here, particularly in the three holding pools. Before 16 June it’s fly-only; when the Halton Toll Bridge gauge is above 15 inches, all legal methods are allowed, subject to the rules.

Key rules

  • Fly-only before June 16th.
  • When the Halton Toll Bridge gauge exceeds 15 inches, all legal methods are allowed.
  • No wading beyond the central line of the river on the Halton beats.
  • No fishing beyond the central line of the river on the Halton beats, except in the area between Old Halton Toll Bridge and Halton Weir.
  • Environment Agency and local fishing byelaws apply.
  • Anglers are strongly encouraged to submit a catch return after fishing.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
