We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a long stretch, running for over a mile between marked start and end points on the St. Michael’s Angling Association map.
  • Fishing is from one bank only. The map identifies Killington Bridge as the access area, so have a proper look at the marked boundary points before setting off.
  • The river is rocky and pooly, which suits worm fishing and spinning. Handy when the water has a bit of colour or the flow is pushing through.
  • Fly fishing is on the cards too, with a short single-handed rod suggested for the trouty water.
  • Salmon and sea trout travel upstream through the stretch towards Tebay. In the stronger flow, migratory-fish fly fishing may need a fast-sinking line to get down properly.
  • It’s described as very lightly fished. That’s a cracking reason to take your time, watch the water and make the most of local knowledge rather than charging through every swim.
  • Native brown trout are present, while salmon and sea trout use the stretch on their upstream journey. Proper game-fishing water, rather than a bag-up coarse-water sort of day.
  • Access is through a five-bar gate, and it’s locked. Members get the key or access code after paying membership for the stretch, so sort that before travelling.
  • Parking is available in lay-bys at either end of Killington Bridge, as marked on the map. A combination-lock car park is also mentioned for members.
  • Take care with gates and don’t climb the gate or drystone walls. Bullocks may be in the fields, and large bulls need giving a very wide berth.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: For trout, try the fly with a short single-handed rod, or fish worm and spinner through the rocky pools. For salmon and sea trout, a fast-sinking line may be needed in the strong flow.
