Tebay Anglers River Lune waters

Tebay Anglers look after a cracking chunk of upper River Lune water, running from Kelleth towards the Sedbergh end of the Fairmile. It is proper wild brown trout, sea-trout and salmon country, with a lively river that can change pace and depth quickly.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The club controls about 15 miles of fishing on the Lune and its tributaries, though the fishing is not continuous on both banks. A few small bits are outside club control, so stick to the signed water.
  • Three mapped sections cover the main beats: Above Kelleth, Roundthwaite Upriver and Roundthwaite Downriver. All the club beats are signposted, which keeps the faff down.
  • The upper section above Kelleth is described as difficult to fish. Expect a river where conditions matter, with flow and depth changing dramatically after weather or a bit of colour.
  • This is migratory water too. Sea trout normally reach the area around June, while salmon generally start appearing from August. That gives the later season a cheeky bit of extra interest.
  • Brown trout are on the menu early, with fly-only fishing from 15 March to 30 April. The club season itself runs from 18 March to 31 October.
  • When the river is below the yellow marker at Lunes Bridge, only fly or worm fishing is allowed. Prawn, shrimp and float fishing are off the table, as is groundbait and maggot fishing.
  • During hours of darkness, fly fishing only is allowed. After 31 August, every hook, including singles and doubles, must be barbless; treble hooks must be barbless at all times.
  • Access is near Tebay and Junction 38 of the M6. The club provides maps with parking suggestions, and asks anglers to fish only between Tebay Anglers signs and shut every gate.
  • The waters are managed alongside the Lune River Trust. Dogs are prohibited while fishing, and salmon must be released under Environment Agency rules.

Methods: Fly fishing is the key approach here, especially in darkness and during the early brown-trout period. Worm fishing is allowed when the river is below the yellow marker at Lunes Bridge, but float, prawn, shrimp, maggot and groundbait tactics are prohibited.

Key rules

  • Club fishing runs from 18 March to 31 October; no day tickets are permitted after 30 September.
  • Salmon fishing is permitted from 1 April to 31 October, sea-trout fishing from 1 May to 30 September, and brown-trout fishing from 15 March to 30 September.
  • Brown-trout fishing is fly-only from 15 March to 30 April.
  • Only fly or worm fishing is allowed when the water is below the yellow marker at Lunes Bridge.
  • Groundbaiting and fishing with maggots, including dock grub and similar species, are prohibited. Prawn, shrimp and float fishing are also prohibited.
  • All salmon must be released. No person may take more than one fish in a day.
  • Minimum listed sizes are 14 inches for salmon or grilse, 14 inches for sea trout and 12 inches for brown trout.
  • Treble hooks must be barbless at all times, and all hooks must be barbless after 31 August. Fish only between Tebay Anglers signs, close all gates and do not bring dogs while fishing.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
