Church Deeps, River Ribble
Church Deeps is the bigger of Southport & District Angling Association’s two Ribble sections at Walton-le-Dale. It’s a steep-banked, deep and tidal bit of river, with proper barbel, quality roach, dace and chub in the mix.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is tidal Ribble, so keep your wits about you. At high tide the level can rise quickly — and by several feet.
- The Church Brow approach comes through two gates, then down steps on a steep river bank. Not one for hauling half the tackle shop.
- The association recommends travelling light. Sensible advice here, especially if you’re carrying feeder gear or a big bait bag.
- Members can also get in from Ribbleside Farm, through the small gate beside the parking area. That section starts at the farmyard parking area.
- The Ribbleside Farm length runs upstream to the wire fence opposite the start of Melling’s Wood. The Church Deeps section is the larger SDAA Ribble length.
- Expect deep water and tidal movement rather than a neat little canal-style glide. Read the pace carefully and keep an eye on the level.
- Double-figure barbel are present, alongside bream, pike and carp over 20 lb. Quality roach, dace and chub are also named for the water.
- Trotting should suit the roach, dace and chub when conditions allow. For barbel and bream, a feeder or suitably robust bottom approach is the obvious shout.
- There’s no overnight faff: fishing is dawn to dusk only. The coarse-fishing close season applies from 15 March to 15 June inclusive.
Methods: Try trotting when the tide and flow settle, with feeder or robust bottom tactics for the deeper water and barbel. Keep tackle manageable for the steep access and changing level.
